The UK government announced on Thursday that its consulate in East Jerusalem will be re‑branded as a “UK Mission” after Israel said the consulate had ceased to function. The decision comes as British diplomats are leaving the building and the UK says it will keep a presence in the city. The move follows a dispute over the status of the consulate, which sits in a territory that Israel annexed in 1967 but that the international community largely considers occupied.
Jerusalem is a flashpoint in the Israeli‑Palestinian conflict. The UK, like many Western governments, keeps diplomatic offices in East Jerusalem to support Palestinian civil society and monitor human rights. Israel has long argued that consulates in the area are illegal and has pressured the UK to close its post. Re‑branding the office to a “UK Mission” signals a shift in diplomatic language while preserving the UK’s ability to engage with Palestinian authorities and NGOs.
The UK said it will keep staff on a temporary basis, working remotely and through other diplomatic channels. The change comes after the UK’s Foreign Office confirmed that the consulate’s building was no longer operational for diplomatic purposes. The new status will allow the UK to continue its work on Palestinian rights, aid programmes and the ongoing peace process. The move could also set a precedent for other countries facing similar disputes over diplomatic premises in contested areas.
