WhatsApp announced on Tuesday that it is extending its parentalโ€‘control features to teen accounts, adding alerts for group activity and new limits on the use of Metaโ€™s AI tools. The changes apply to users aged 13โ€‘17 who are linked to a parentโ€‘managed account, and will roll out globally over the next few weeks. The move follows a pilot earlier this year that gave parents oversight of accounts for children under 13.

The expansion comes as concerns about teen safety on messaging apps have grown. Regulators in the EU and the United States have been pressuring tech firms to curb online bullying, misinformation, and the misuse of AIโ€‘generated content. WhatsAppโ€™s parentโ€‘company, Meta, faced criticism after a 2023 update that made AI chat features more accessible, prompting calls for tighter safeguards. Competing platforms such as Snapchat and TikTok have already introduced similar teenโ€‘focused controls, raising the stakes for WhatsApp to keep its user base.

Under the new system, parents receive a daily summary of any group chats their teen joins, including the names of other participants and the number of messages exchanged. They can also block their teen from creating new groups or joining existing ones without approval. In addition, Meta AI functionsโ€”such as image generation and text suggestionsโ€”are disabled for teen accounts unless a parent explicitly enables them. The company says the controls are optional and can be adjusted at any time from the parentโ€™s WhatsApp dashboard. Early feedback from parent advocacy groups has been positive, noting the added transparency, while some privacy experts warn that increased monitoring could raise dataโ€‘collection concerns.

WhatsApp plans to complete the rollout by the end of November and will monitor usage metrics to fineโ€‘tune the features. The company says it will release an API for thirdโ€‘party parentalโ€‘control apps later in the year, aiming to integrate with broader digitalโ€‘wellness solutions. If the controls prove effective, they could set a new industry standard for messaging safety and influence future regulatory guidelines. Parents and teens alike will be watching to see whether the added oversight curbs harmful behavior without stifling normal conversation.
